Joychandi Pahar

Joychandi Pahar (Bengali: জয়্চণ্ডী পাহাড়) is a hill which is a popular tourist attraction in the Indian state of West Bengal. Quiet famous for mountaineering in December – January and is three kilometres from the subdivisional town of Raghunathpur, Purulia district. It is on the Purulia – Barakar road and got its named after CHANDI Ma (Goddess Chandi). Closest railway station is the Joychandi Pahar railway station , on the Asansol – Adra section of South Eastern Railway. The other rock climbing centre nearby is at Susunia Pahar. Previously Govt. have not done much to promote tourism in this part but now you can find Govt. cottages. There is a small temple dedicated to Ma Chandi on top of the Hill. Its natural beauty is enhanced by the presence of number of small lakes and an abandoned town which is supposed to be the shelter of Dacoits long back. The Temple top is around 520 steps away from foothill.


How to Reach:
By Train: - Nearest Joychandi pahar railway station
By Car:- This place is located about 28 odd kms away from the WBFDC Resort in Garhpanchkot, Purulia and 3 Km from  Raghunathpur town. You have to Cross Raghunathpur Town moving towards Adra to reach Joychandi Pahar.
Nearest Airport is Kolkata Airport.
It has an average elevation of 155 m (509 ft). The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.

The film Hirak Rajar Deshe was partially shot in the mountainous area. Hirak Rajar Deshe is a very popular Bengali movie directed by legendary director Satyajit Ray. Although the Hills get a little windy on December-January but the intriguing part is that on the last week of January the local organise a winter festival called Joy Chandi Pahar Porjoton Utsob. There is Satyajit roy moncho where many popular artist present their performance.

It’s a serene beauty and a good contender to visits at least once.

  1. How far from Adra station ? Where to stay. Where to find Govt cottages, in which area ? Is it near Joychandi Pahar ? We like to know these details. And name some hotels near Adra/Purulia or Raghunathpur. Thanks
